The small town lies close to the Bulgarian-Greek border

The small town lies about 40 km to the south of Velingrad, close to the Bulgarian-Greek border. The town is situated on the left bank of the river of Dospat close to the northwestern end of one of the most beautiful and popular dams in Bulgaria – the Dospat Dam.

The proximity of a dam, the fresh and healthy air and beautiful surroundings draw visitors to Surnitsa, especially during the summer. The town is used as a set-off base for fishermen who angle in the dam''s waters, though the fieriest ones camp right on its banks. The dam is not only one of the most picturesque, but also ranks among the biggest in the country. It has capacity of 450mn cubic meters, which ranks it the 5th largest in Bulgaria. It is 18 km long and 1.5 km wide and is a part of a large hydro-energy complex, named Dospat - Krichim.
