The Rocky Churches At the Village of Ivanovo

The rocky mediaeval monuments in Ivanovo (skalnite tsarkvi) comprise a complex of churches, chapels and monastery cells, hewn into the cliffs on both sides of the river Roussenski Lom at a hight of 6 to 10 m. The complex was created in XIII century and inhabited by monks till XVII century. The preserved murals and inscriptions bear testimony to the thriving of a large monachal colony in XIII-XIV century and its significance as a literary and educational centre. been a place of enlightenment it was richly endowed by the Bulgarian tsars Ivan-Assen (1218-1241) and Ivan-Alexander (1331-1371). One of the inscriptions on the rocky walls makes reference to the burial of the Bulgarian tsar George Terter (1279-1292) on location of the complex.

The unique mural paintings of the churches represent some of the most impressive examples of the monumental pictorial art on the Balkan peninsula, indicative for the high level of artistic culture in mediaeval Bulgaria. Dated from the beginning of XIII century, they are considered to precede the murals of the Boyanna church.

The rocky monuments are situated 20 km south of the city of Rousse.

In 1983 they were announced a UNESCO monument.
