Thracian tomb in Sveshtari

This tomb is a unique monument of the Thracian Hellenistic art from the first half of the 3 rd century BC. It was discovered in the course of archeological excavations of a Thracian tumulus near the village of Sveshtari in 1982. It comprises a corridor and three chambers of almost square shape covered by a semispherical arch. The central burial chamber contains 2 stone beds; above the abundant relief decoration is painted a ritual scene presenting the deification of a Thracian nobleman. The prolonged proportions of the statues, the composition and the style are similar to those in the Kazanlak Thracian tomb. The funeral ritual, the construction technique, the architecture and the decoration testify that this is the tomb of a Thracian ruler. The tomb near Sveshtari is a remarkable monument of high artistic and historic value; it is a brilliant evidence of the contribution of Thracians to the world cultural heritage.

It is located 34 km away from the town of Razgrad.

It was included on the World Heritage List of UNESCO in 1986.
