It is located in the elevation Gorata in the Eastern Rhodopes, in the land of the village of Mezek, province of Svilengrad.

Until 1900 the wall of this relatively well preserved fortress was crowned with pinnacles and platforms, which were then destroyed by the Ottoman authorities in order to build a new caserne in Svilengrad. Nevertheless, there are still walls that rise 10 m high. The fortress, which remains was probably erected in the 11 th century.

Near the fortress passes the international walking route “E- 8”, which ends in the village of Mezek.

Not far away are the famous Thracian cupola tombs Maltepe and Kurtkale, which date back to the 4 th century BC.

The border village of Mezek is about 6 km to the southwest of Svilengrad. The fortress and the tombs are just outside the village.
