Location and Area: The Republic of Bulgaria is located in the eastern part of the Balkan Peninsula. With a surface of 111,000 square km it covers 22% of the Balkans. Bulgaria is bordered by Romania to the north, by Turkey and Greece to the south, by Serbia and Macedonia to the west and by the Black Sea to the east.
Relief: 2 large mountain ranges devide Bulgaria into 4 distinctive regions: the Danubian hilly plain to the north, the Balkan mountain, the Thracian plain and the Rhodope mountain.
Forests: 1/3 of the territory. The Danubian hilly plain ranges its steep terrace with a fecund ground in northern Bulgaria. To the south, the land rises to the rocky ranges of the Balkan mountains. Thereafter it lowers to the Thracian plain. Southern and Western Bulgaria are embossed by the mountains of Vitosha, Rila, Rhodopes and Pirin. The Moussala in Rila mountain is the highest peak of the Balkan Peninsula (2,925 m high).
Climate: moderate continental with Mediterranean influences in the southern regions and on the Black sea cost. The average annual temperature in northern Bulgaria is 11.5° C, in southern Bulgaria - 15° C. The average temperature in July is 23-25° C. The average annual rainfall varies between 400 - 500 mm in the plains and on the Black sea cost and 1,000 - 1,200 mm in the mountains. The spring is short and the autumn long and mild.
