Samuilova fortress

It is located 18 km south west from the town of Petrich. Here, on 29.07.1014 there was a memorable battle between the Bulgarian king Samuil and the Byzantine emperor Vasilii II, after which the First Bulgarian kingdom has been conquered by Byzantine. According to the contemporaries of this battle, after his victory Vasilii II has ordered the captured 15 000 Bulgarian solders to be blinded as on each 100 people to be left one leader with one eye. After this cruelty, the nickname Murder of the Bulgarians has been added to the name of the Byzantine emperor.

In 1982 at the place of the battle a memorial complex, in compliance with the archeological sights here, has been built up.
