A Journey by Sea and Land in 1809, 1810, 1811
The walls of Vidin are well built and fortified after the European fashion, or at least they have been slightly changed since the days of the Austrian conquest...
The old Castle, in spite of its decrepit condition, is still an impressive and awe-inspiring huge building. Viewed from the river, it is a magnificent and picturesque site in the whole perspective of the city. Its nearness to the new construction works comes to demonstrate that while the defence facilities have achieved a great advance with the contemporary methods of fortification, the ancient constructions show an even more expressive magnitude.
