Osman Pazvantooglu was the most notable ruler of the Vidin area the Ottoman conquest. He was born in a rich Vidin family of janizaries in 1758. He was banished into exile, together with his father Yomer Pazvantooglu, several times. He managed to tear off a huge territory of power from the central authority and to reign as an independent ruler from 1793 to 1807.
At the end of 18 c. Sultan Selim III undertook three military campaigns against Vidin and his armies besieged the city two times without any success. Many military, religious and public buildings from his time have been preserved. Osman Pazvantooglu died in Vidin on 5/17 February 1807.
