King Mihael III Shishman Assen
Despot Shishman's son from his first marriage Michael III Shishman Assen was born in 1280 and abetted his father in ruling the Bdin area since 1308. He was titled despot by the Bulgarian King Theodor Svetoslav, who was also his cousin.
After the end of the Terter dynasty he ascended the throne (1323-1330) and to stress explicitly that he belonged to the Assen dynasty, he assumed the name Assen. In 1324 he divorced his wife Ana-Neda, who was exiled together with their children to a monastery. Among their exiled children was Ivan Stefan, the heir to the throne. Consequently Michael III married the Byzantine Emperor Andronicus III Paleolog's sister, who was King Teodor Svetoslav's widow.
King Michael III Shishman Assen was killed in a battle against the Serbian army near Velbouzhd on 28 July 1330.
