The region of Nevestino is rich in virgin natural sights and historical remains from all period. Here, the river of Struma is said to be most generous on its way to the sea, as it gives fertile grounds to a variety of plant species.
The area keeps traces of all ancient times. One of these is a Neolithic settlement just outside the village of Nevestino, situated over a natural terrace on the left bank of the Struma river. Another prehistorical settlement has been found in the area of the village of Vaxevo. It is the only such settlement uncovered in Western Bulgaria, where all three prehistorical periods – the Neolithic, the Eneolithic and the Bronze eras have left their traces, bringing great value to chronological studies.
The entire municipality of Nevestino is covered by remains of antique settlements, mounds, necropolises, and fortresses, spread around the villages of Nevestino, Pastuh, Vaxevo, Smolichano, Pelatikovo, etc. The biggest remains from the Middle Ages are a fortress in the Skaleto area, the St Ivan and Our Lady churches in the village of Pastuh, a cemetery church close to the village of Murvodol and the Holy Trinity church in the village of Rakovo. Close to the village of Smolichano, a monastery has been built over the remains of a medieval church. This monastery, named St Ana, perches over a cliff niche with a waterfall and has become a favourite place for weekend trips.
The biggest architectural landmark in the Nevestino municipality is the Kadin Bridge, built in 1470 over the river of Struma. The architecture of the bridge represents a mixture of antique, medieval and renaissance forms adapted to local styles. The bridge has 5 vaults and is 100 metres long. It is covered by big granite layers, while a granite plate with a Turkish language note on the year of construction, is incorporated in the eastern parapet.
