U.S. to propose USD 80 million for military bases in Bulgaria

Date: 10.09.2004

Chairman of the parliamentary Committee for Foreign Policy Solomon Passy has told journalists in the seaside town of Pomorie that the U.S. will allot funding for the military bases in Bulgaria.

The U.S. will soon propose approximately USD 80 million for tenders about the military bases built in Bulgaria. We visited one of the bases, the one close to the village of Novo Selo, Sliven region, and I have to tell you that I was impressed by the training conditions the U.S. bases give Bulgarian soldiers and officers. This is indeed an excellent acquisition for the Bulgarian Armed Forces and I am happy that the bases are a fact and are working now, five years after the start of the talks, said Solomon Passy at the international conference that took place in the town of Pomorie. The topic of the conference is Utilization and Security in Armed Forces Transformation. The conference was attended by a delegation of U.S. Congress members headed by Joe Wilson, member of the Committee on Armed Services and chairman of the friendship group with Bulgaria.
