Bulgarian police busts drugs for Bgn. 6 million

Date: 27.10.2005

Bulgarian police officers nabbed over fifty kilos of amphetamines, meant for the Arab market where they could be worth about BGN 6 M.

The drugs were seized during a joint operation of the police task forces of two Southern Bulgarian cities - Haskovo and Stara Zagora on Saturday.

The police apprehended a 28-year-old man in whose minivan and house they found the amphetamine pills. He was followed and detained after taking a duffel bag from a hiding-place that the police had been monitoring in relation with an international drug-trafficking channel destined for the Arab market. Once the culprit tried to get inside his minivan he was arrested. The duffel bag contained seven nylon bags full of pink pills that tested as amphetamines. The pills weighed 24.5 kilos.

Joint search operations led the police to the offender's home where 27 more kilos of amphetamines were found, along with a bag of cannabis, and some money.

According to the police, the drugs came from Western Europe and were destined for the Arab market. The young man, who was arrested at the crime scene, did not have a police record.
