Sofia, Bucharest to cooperate for EU entry

Date: 28.10.2005

High-ranked officials from Bulgaria and Romania pledged Tuesday to work together for progressing into full EU membership.

The bloc issued Tuesday a warning on the two aspirants that they must speed up reforms and step up the fight against corruption. The annual progress report also said they must beef up border control, improve food hygiene standards and strengthen their administration and courts.

If the two fail to implement reforms on time, they risk EU entry postponement from 2007 to 2008.

The report came amid a brief Bulgarian visit of Romania's Foreign Minister Mihai Ungureanu. He has met Bulgaria's Premier Sergey Stanishev, and agreed to cooperate closely in relation to regional matters.
