Two dozens firms bid for Lyulin highway construction

Date: 31.10.2005

A total of 21 companies have lodged bids for the construction of Lyulin Highway, Bulgarian Road Authority announced.

Midday of October 26 was the deadline - extended by several weeks because of the intense interest - for the paperwork to be submitted by more than 74 firms that had initially purchased the necessary documents.

The offers will be opened in the middle of November, the Authority's Director Velichko Zhelev specified. He explained the reason was a letter from the European Commission notifying of a delay in the constitution of a tender body to assess the lodged bids.

It is expected that by December 6 the Bulgarian Road Authority would be able to announce the short-listed candidates for the supervisory works on the highway's construction, at the cost of EUR 7.5 M.

The project for the construction of 19-km highway is part of the Trans-European transport corridor No.4 spanning on Bulgarian territory the cities of Vidin and Sofia with the Kulata border checkpoint on the north-south axis.

Its cost is estimated at EUR 148.45 M, including EUR 111.338 M ISPA funds and EUR 37.112 co-funding by Bulgaria.

The Lyulin Highway is anticipated also as an alternative to resolve one of gravest problems of the traffic in the 2-million capital city, which in many parts runs through densely populated Sofia neighbourhoods.
