Date: 28.11.2005

German Chancellor Angela Merkel sits next to Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Sergey Stanishev, during a formal dinner at the EuroMed summit in Barcelona.

Bulgaria's entry into the European Union and its preparation for it were the main topics of the discussions between Bulgaria's Prime Minister Sergey Stanishev and German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

The two met at the EU-Mediterranean Summit in Barcelona.

Stanishev and Merkel agreed that Bulgaria and Germany enjoy very good bilateral relations both economic and political. Prime Minister Stanishev underlined that Germany is a key partner for Bulgaria in its work towards the EU accession.

Leaders of the EU and Mediterranean countries are reportedly struggling to agree on a common definition of terrorism and a code to combat it. The Barcelona summit is being participated by a Bulgarian delegation as well, led by Prime Minister Stanishev. Host Spain and the UK are willing to reach an agreed position, but Arab delegates are said to object to a proposed definition.

Addressing the participants in the forum Stanishev said that the dialog between the countries form the Mediterranean area is becoming a main form of cooperation. He also voiced his believes that the Barcelona process gives the opportunity to the EU and Mediterranean countries to establish a peaceful and stable zone.
