Bulgaria's Interior to let out former spies

Date: 27.09.2005

Bulgaria's Interior Ministry has announced plans to dissolve a newly-formed consulting body including former intelligence officers.

Interior chief Rumen Petkov said that the body would be dismissed once necessary law amendments are passed.

The council's founding a few weeks ago sparkled fierce criticism from politicians and the media.

Some argued that influential figures from the communist-era security services were represented in the council.

One of the members is NATO-disliked Gen. Brigo Asparuhov, whom the former prime minister wanted to make his advisor last year.

Simeon Saxe-Coburg had to give up the idea because of fierce international controversy.
