Ex-Sofia Mayor admits slump in party ratyng

Date: 29.09.2005

Politics

The Union of Free Democrats (UFD) has seen a tide-away of public confidence largely because of the personal attacks against its leader, Stefan Sofianski admitted at a party conference on Saturday.

Sofianski, who quit the mayoral chair to enter the Parliament, defended his resilience "to strike back" to avoid a clash between two institutions - the city mayoral vs. the prosecution.

Responding to accusations he had "flirted with socialists" and thus betrayed the right-wing cause, Stefan Sofianski confirmed the firm opposition of UFD to the ruling coalition, but not at the cost of the EU membership of the country.

According to Sofianski, the party cannot stand up in opposition of the main political priority of the government - Bulgaria's accession to the EU.

He urged party fellowmen to work for the consolidation of UFD as a parliamentary faction in the next years and to enhance its legislature potential struggling for the interests of middle class and rightist supporters.

During the national conference members some ten UFD council members circulated a letter reproaching "the modified identity of the party" and called for a move back to the right spectrum.

Stefan Sofianski is currently going through hard times facing a possibility to say good-bye to his MP immunity, after the Chief Prosecutor has made a move for this to reinstate the trials against him.

Sofianski's coalition partners from the Bulgarian People's Union - Anastasia Mozer and Krassimir Karakachanov - attended the conference as guests.
