Majority alone enter body over Ex-Sofia mayor immunity

Date: 28.09.2005

The ruling majority in Bulgaria's parliament and the tiniest right-wing formation approved the establishment of an ad hoc commission for lifting the immunity of former Sofia mayor and MP Stefan Sofianski.

The decision was passed with the votes of 146 MPs. Another 29 voted against and 3 abstained.

The temporarily set body will have one month to explore evidence about a heavy crime perpetrated by Stefan Sofianski.

The right-wing opposition from the United Democratic Forces and Democrats for Strong Bulgaria, as well as the nationalists from Ataka vehemently refused to enter the commission, comparing its mission to a comrades' court.

"By refusing to enter the commission, the right-wing opposition refuses to bear responsibility," Sofianski himself, who belongs to the tiniest right-wing Bulgarian People's Union, commented after the vote.
