Mayor saga ends for Velingrad

Date: 28.09.2005

The newly-elected mayor of Velingrad, southwest Bulgaria, finally stepped in office on Tuesday.

Independent Stoyan Dulev claimed the town in 26 September, but municipal council members repeatedly boycotted his swear-in ceremony.

On Tuesday, 26 of the 29 members were finally present, making it possible for the ceremony to be held.

The boycotters from the ruling Socialist Party (SP) and Simeon II National Movement (SIINM) had announced in a declaration that they insist that the mayor signs an agreement of solidarity in ruling the town.

In the September 26 vote Dulev outran Ivan Lebanov, who was supported by SP and SIINM. However the vote was subject to doubt, because there were counterfeit ballot papers cast in favour of the independent Dulev in one of the voting sections.
