A chance for illegal bulgarian workers in Greece

Date: 18.10.2005

Bulgaria will be one of the first countries where Greece is opening work bureaus that aim to help legalize the statute of illegal workers, reports claim.

New changes is the Greek immigration law would allow thousands of Bulgarians, working in Greece without proper papers and permission, to legalize their stay in the country, private bTV channel announced Sunday.

There are a couple of requirements, however, the most important ones being that the immigrant has entered Greece legally in 2004 and can prove it with a passport stamp, and that they have a health insurance.

These present problems, officials commented, because many immigrants have entered the country through other EU member countries and lack the stamp. There is also the option that the Bulgarian government has already replaced the passport bearing the stamp due to expiration.

Another problem is the health insurance that costs close to EUR 1,000, the report claimed.

Regardless of all, this would probably be the last chance for illegal workers to gain working visas and permits.

There are about 60,000 Bulgarians legally living and working in Greece and the illegal immigrants are at least two to seven times that number.
