New chairman of the Bulgarian Football Union elected

Date: 24.10.2005

Bulgaria's President Georgi Parvanov sent a congratulatory note to the new chairman of the Bulgarian Football Union (BFU) former star goalkeeper Borislav Mihaylov on Saturday.

The congratulatory note was sent to the BFU a day after Mihaylov dethroned Ivan Slavkov after 10 years of presidency over the union.

Parvanov said that he was convinced that Mihaylov's long-term experience as a player and captain of the national team, and as a vice-president of the union meant that he would do well in his new appointment. The trust of the majority that voted for Mihaylov on Friday also gave Parvanov assurance that the former would work in a spirit of cooperation with the union's management.

The president wished Mihaylov and the newly elected management of the union lots of successes both in the national and club football tournaments and a lot of joy and pride to the millions of fans in Bulgaria.

With Slavkov's ousting, an entire era in the nation's sport administration was thrown in the archives. Ivan Slavkov had headed the BFU for at least ten years, and was believed to have unshakable dominance in local sport affairs.

Borisslav Mihaylov's first task as BFU President was to appoint the new members of the executive council.

His choice were Yordan Lechkov, Mihail Kasabov, Nassko Sirakov, Vesselin Balevski, Andrey Ikonomov, Stefan Ormandzhiev, Emil Kostadinov, Krassimir Georgiev, Ivan Lekov, Nikolay Tsvetin and Hristo Portochanov.
