Brussels: Bulgaria makes no progress

Date: 26.10.2005

The regular report on the progress of Bulgaria towards EU accession will read that the country hasn't made any progress since this summer, when EU enlargement commissioner Olli Rehn "yellow-carded" Bulgaria for lagging behind in five major areas. The information came from Euractiv agency, which quotes the main conclusions of the already prepared reports. The most acute problems are the judicial system and home affairs, agriculture, environment, consumer rights protection and regional policy.
The assessment of Romania's progress is going to be similar. Our neighbors have seven problematic domains. Euractive points out that nevertheless Bulgaria has an opportunity to catch up, because the country has a coalition government, which has a grand majority in the parliament. According to the prognosis, Bulgaria and Romania will remain under pressure at least until the next report is prepared in April or May.

So far, no intentions have become obvious to postpone the EU membership of Bulgaria and Romania. The moods within the EU are volatile, though, Euractive says further.
