Bulgaria clears sale of key power plant

Date: 30.10.2005

Bulgarian government has given clearance for the long-delayed sale of a major coal-fired power plant to Russia's energy giant RAO Unified Energy Systems.

Earlier in May RAO UES won the tender for the thermal power plant in the Black Sea port of Varna, offering EUR 578.8 M.

The deal was postponed several times because the Russian investor was unhappy with a recent equipment delivery deal between the Varna utility and German producer Siemens AG, Forbes online edition reminded.

Earlier this month, Siemens EOOD, the Bulgaria unit of Siemens AG, announced a EUR 11 M deal with the Varna plant for equipment delivery over the next three years.

On Wednesday, Siemens AG agreed to cancel the contract with the Bulgarian government to make it easier to privatize the state-owned power plant, Forbes added.
