Bulgaria destroys 40,000 pirate CDs

Date: 31.10.2005

Bulgarian officials destroyed over 40,000 confiscated pirate CDs containing music, movies and software on Friday.

Vasil Panov of the Bulgaria's Tax Administration commented that it was possible for the incomes of selling these CDs to be used for financing organized crime, adding that a stall selling such illegal goods made about BGN 1,000 a day.

This was quite an amount, Panov said, and claimed that the information that they had and talks on the street pointed at the possibility that such businesses were patronized by criminal organizations.

The money would hardly be enough to support the bosses, but they surely fed the low and mid-levels, he said.

Despite frequent police raids, pirated movies and music appear on Sofia's streets within days of their world premieres, selling for no more than the equivalent of EUR 4.

Under international pressure and the threat of sanctions by the European Union, which Bulgaria aspires to join, the government has stepped up measures against illegal manufacturers.
