BDZ has debts of 242 million levs

Date: 30.10.2005

The new Director of the Bulgarian State Railways (BDZ), Oleg Petkov, inherited a debt of 242 million levs (1 euro=1.95 levs) and a loss of 26,5 million levs. Some 82% of the locomotives and the motor carriages in the BDZ are over 20 years old.

Oleg Petkov stated that the new Siemens Desiro locomotives were not the best solution for the BDZ and that the deal was going to be re-examined. Mr. Petkov also admitted of the problem with the quick wearing of the wheels about which Standart daily wrote first.

"The BDZ will overcome the crisis in the company through attraction of private capital, including through sale of company's shares," Petkov explained.
