144 arrests in Bulgaria after top banker murder

Bulgaria's Interior Minister Rumen Petkov has reported to Prime Minister Sergey Stanishev over the latest police operations against organized crime in Bulgaria.

The specialized police operations were launched following the broad daylight murder of Bulgaria's top banker Emil Kyulev.

Deputy Interior Minister Kamen Penkov explained that a total of 1,621 vehicles and 1,649 people have been checked in Sofia alone. Six people were arrested during the operation as they were declared for national search, another 67 others were detained over different crime deeds.

A total of 12,962 cars and 2,555 people have been inspected in Bulgaria since October 26. Some 144 people have been detained, police authorities announced.

Later on Friday the special police forces stormed the office of one of the underworld figures in Bulgaria Krasimir Marinov dubbed the Marguin. According to media reports the computers and all documents found in the office have been checked and the Marguin has been detained for 24 hours.

The police operations will continue, the Interior Minister underlined. The latest crime operation comes after the murder of Emil Kyulev.

Kyulev one of the richest men in the country and owner of Bulgaria's largest insurance and banking group, DZI Group was shot to death while he was riding in a jeep at one of Sofia's main boulevards. His execution has been described as the most provocative murder and has shocked both the business and political elite in the country.

The death of Emil Kyulev was the eighth public murder in the country for the last three months alone.
