Temple of the Sun near Paleokastro fortress

Date: 03.11.2005

A unique rock temple of the Sun with over 100 carved in the rock sun disks stands near Paleokastro fortress, Topolovgrad region, southeastern Bulgaria. The disks' diameter ranges between 20 and 90 cm. The rocks there form a chain of pinnacles meeting the morning rays of the Sun worshipped by the ancient Thracians. The temple in the village of Melnitsa is similar.

In the same region relics of Odrissi Thracians' tombs are preserved dating back to the Iron Age. The burial megalithic constructions lie at some 70 km from the town of Yambol (southeastern Bulgaria). These are dolmens dating back to 1200 up to 550 BC. In Bulgaria there were over 600 such structures once but now most of them are in ruins.
