Bulgarian hospitals use obsolete equipment

Date: 01.11.2005

The larger share of medical equipment used in the Bulgarian hospitals should be scrapped when the country joins the EU

"About 70% of the hospitals' equipment is good for nothing," says Dr Vanyo Sharkov from the Health Committee in Parliament. The funds allotted to hospitals and the rate at which the health care budget expands gives no opportunity for equipment renovation. This state of affairs will make the Bulgarian hospitals absolutely uncompetitive in the European Union. And a great number of hospitals will have to be closed down because they won't be able to meet the requirements of the EU, Sharkov adds.
The money given to the Ministry of Health in 2006 will be by 46% less than required, if the Finance Ministry's proposal is adopted.
