Bulgaria's cabinet allocates BGN 5 M to police

Date: 04.11.2005

Bulgaria's Cabinet decided to grant an extra BGN 5 M to the Ministry of Interior for emergency measures until the end of the year.

Prime Minister Sergey Stanishev promised that the police would not just demonstrate actions for publicity but would seriously engage in the fight against organized crime.

BGN 2 M of the promised money would go for buying surveillance cameras and GPS systems, BGN 1 M would provide for fuel and lubricants for the police vehicles and the remaining BGN 2 M would pay the extra hours that the officers would have to put in.

The amount would be covered by savings and excesses in this year's budget, Stanishev said, adding that the problem with organized crime had to be solved not only because that's what the EU expected from Bulgaria, but also because it slowed down the internal development of the country.
