Bulgaria takes guard of EU's outer border - PM

Date: 07.11.2005

In fourteen months Bulgaria will take on guard as an outer border of the European Union, Prime Minister Sergey Stanishev said in Burgas.

He attended Sunday the official ceremony on navy adoption of Bulgaria's newest battleship, the frigate Druzki (Intrepid).

Sided by Defense Minister Vesselin Bliznakov and Chief of Army Staff General Nikola Kolev, the premier said the coalition government has demonstrated continuity in the meeting of NATO-bound engagements.

Sergey Stanishev pledged that government's plans concerning Bulgarian army modernization will be completed by 2015. As a full-fledged NATO member since April 2004 Bulgaria has engaged to execute a thorough modernisation of its army forces.

The Bulgarian frigate formerly called Vanderlaar was purchased from Belgium at the cost of EUR 23 M.

The frigate Druzki (Intrepid) is a multi-task battleship with modern equipment and armament for the Alliance's terrorist traffic control operations in the Black and Mediterranean seas.
