Sofia awakes in winter grasp

Date: 20.11.2005

Bulgaria's capital awoke Saturday in the grasp of the winter.

The first snow in Sofia caused minor traffic problems. Traffic in Sofia is normal for the winter conditions. All main Sofia thoroughfares have been cleaned up over the night, Sofia mayor Boyko Borissov announced.

Borissov has personally observed the snow cleaning procedures in the capital, the National Radio reported. The work of the cleaning teams was launched at 2 o'clock in the night.

Just a day earlier in the face of approaching wintertime, Mayor Borissov demanded for the local meteorological authority to submit to the municipality weather forecasts at every six hours. Thus the snow-cleaners will be better informed and have time enough to respond to aggravating weather, Borissov argued his decision.

With temperatures as low as 3-4 degrees Celsius, north-eastern cities Russe, Silistra, Dobritch and Shumen have been the first to feel the winter this year.
