Restaurant-keepers in Varna rise in rebellion

Date: 01.12.2005

The restaurant-keepers in the northern coastal town Varna are about to rise in rebellion. Their bitter reaction is triggered by the decision of the Varna Municipal Council, ruling that all public and entertainment establishments in the city should be closed by 11:00 p.m. in winter and by midnight in the summer, when the city is overcrowded by myriads of tourists. They say that this rule will prove catastrophic for the tourism business and will rob 10,000 people of their daily bread.

Yesterday, some restaurant-keepers wrote a protest letter to the Municipality and rallied in front of the City Hall.

At the same time, the Municipal Councilors have not give any explanation as to what triggered their decision. If noise pollution is the problem, it may be solved with high fines, imposed by the local authorities.

"In addition to forcing many pub-keepers out of business, the new ordinance will cause stagnation on the market, which in turn will rocket the prices up, because the model of healthy competition will be broken," restaurant-keepers say.
