London is the new name of buntsevo

Date: 06.12.2005

"Hello, no problem," greets her guests auntie Habibe from the village of Buntsevo. Her English is not impeccable, but quite passable for her venerable age. The old lady had to start learning English several months ago, when Pamela and Anthony Show moved to Buntsevo from London. Local people firmly believe that neighbors must be on speaking terms, help and respect each other. "That's what made me master a dozen of words in their language. I've never thought that foreigners may settle in our village, but God's ways are mysterious. We do get along well," says Habibe.

The Shows' house is at the upper end of the village. When they arrived the local wise-crackers immediately renamed the neighborhood to "London." The six hundred villagers are proud that Buntsevo is the only village nestled in the bosom of the western Rhodopes, which a couple from the world metropolis have chosen for their new home. The locals don't complain that they had to sit over dictionaries to be able to communicate with Anthony and Pam. "They are doing it of their own accord, because they want to talk with the newcomers. Otherwise I would have ordered them to learn some basic English," says village's mayor Moustafa Vessalov. "We have no choice we have to learn English. The way it is after several year the English settlers might outnumber us," the locals say.
