Date: 09.12.2005

The Swedish Prime Minister Goran Persson is positive that Bulgaria will join the European Union (EU) as planned January 1, 2007.

This emerged from his meeting with Bulgaria's Prime Minister Sergey Stanishev, who is currently in Sweden. Persson greeted Stanishev pointing out that the two countries enjoy excellent bilateral relations.

The two prime ministers agreed that Bulgaria and Sweden should boost business cooperation and that Sweden should increase its investments in the Balkan country.

Prime Minister Segey Stanishev has also underlined that Bulgaria's Cabinet has paid great attention to the EU Monitoring report and specified some of the measures that have already been taken.

It was also announced that all political parties in the Swedish parliament are backing the ratification of the Bulgaria EU accession treaty.

Stanishe also talked to Sweden's Foreign Minister Laila Freivald. He once again confirmed Bulgaria's readiness to fulfill all EU requirements ahead of the country's entry.

Bulgaria's prime minister is also scheduled to meet Sweden's King Carl XVI Gustaf.
