Thousands of Bulgarian teachers go on strike

Date: 12.12.2005

Bulgarian teachers from across the country will head for the picket lines on Monday after talks for a 15% pay rise failed.

The staff of 1850 schools and 560 kindergartens will join the strike, to take place by stages, Yanka Takeva, chair of the Bulgarian Teachers Union announced at a press conference Saturday. The union is part of one of the two biggest trade union in Bulgaria the Confederation of Independent Trade Unions in Bulgaria.

In Sofia alone 150 schools and 102 kindergartens will close doors.

Under local legislation all protesting teachers will be in the class rooms, but there won't be any classes.

Eighty percent of Bulgaria's teachers staged a warning hour-long effective strike on Friday to protest against the 3% raise in pay as of January 2006, offered by representatives of the Education, Finance, and Labor Ministry.
