Date: 12.12.2005

"State subsidies of 230 million levs, (1euro=1.95levs) were given in 2004," Plamen Vassilev, head of department with the Ministry of Finance, informed.

The biggest funds were allocated to the Bulgaria's State Railways (BDZ) so that pupils, students and pensioners could travel with discounts.

The public transport companies and the bread suppliers to the mountain villages have also been subsidized.

In case the subsidies are used differently from their purpose, they have to be paid back along with interests and a fine of between 500 and 200,000 levs is to be imposed.

After Bulgaria's EU accession, the permissions for state subsidies will be given by the European Commission in Brussels.
