Bulgaria's Stoitchkov in Algeria as Kofi Annan's special representative

Date: 15.12.2005

Bulgaria's football superstar Hristo Stoitchkov was in Algeria as Special Representative of UN Secretary General Kofi Annan over the declaration of 2006 International Year of Deserts and Desertification (IYDD).

Stoitchkov was welcomed by Algeria's Minister of Urban Planning and Environment and chair of the Deserts in the World foundation Cherif Rahmani. They discussed the way Stoitchkov could help for the popularization of the deserts, the preservation of the culture heritage and biological variety.

At the special press conference organized following the meeting Stoitchkov's statement gained him wide support as he showed great interest in the problems people living in the desert areas face.

The International Year was declared at the 58th session of the General Assembly in an effort to curb Desertification around the globe, with its devastating environmental, social and economic costs.

The IYDD provides a major opportunity both to strengthen the visibility and importance of the drylands issue on the international environmental agenda and to highlight the truly global nature of the problem. All countries and civil society organizations have been encouraged to undertake special initiatives to mark the Year, and preparations are now well under way around the world.
