Bulgaria's Trakiya highway ready by mid 2009

Date: 15.12.2005

Bulgaria's Trakiya highway will be ready by the end of 2008 or by the middle of 2009, Regional Development Minister Asen Gagauzov told the Parliamentary commission on local governing and regional policy.

In the words of Gagauzov is still not clear what will happen with the concession of the highway. Bulgaria's key southern road-belt was granted on a 35-year concession to a Bulgarian-Portuguese consortium.

The MPs of the commission listened to the reports of Minister Gagauzov and the head of the executive agency "Roads" Veliko Zhelev on the condition of the local infrastructure, the development and the maintenance of the infrastructure.

For its first-class road network in the period 2007-2013 Bulgaria will receive from the European Union (EU) some EUR 850-900 M. Therefore Bulgaria has to look for additional ways of financing, Gagauzov pointed out.

The Regional Development Minister also said that additional EUR 900 M will be invested in the railroad infrastructure.
