Foreigners hurry to buy houses along the border

Date: 19.12.2005

Foreigners seek to buy houses along the Bulgarian-Greek border, claim mayors of the villages in the Nevrokop region. The growing demand is due to the opening of the new border checkpoint Ilinden-Exohi, which was put into operation at the end of the last week. Locals frantically repair old deserted buildings hoping for a better bargain. Currently, a rickety building that a few months ago would cost only 1000-2000 levs is now selling at about 10,000-15,000 levs (5,000-7,500 euro,) locals say. About twenty houses have been already sold in the village of Teshovo.
