Bulgaria's Topalov World's New Chess Champion

Date: 14.10.2005
Bulgaria's chess master Veselin Topalov has emerged the New World Chess Champion, 2005, with his unsurpassable score of 9.5 points out of 13 games. This is Topalov's biggest achievement after beating legendary Gary Kasparov at Linares earlier this year and a group of top 6 chess players including Viswanathan Anand to lift the M-Tel Trophy in Sofia. With Anand and Peter Svidler both conceding early draws the FIDE World Championship in San Luis, Argentina, was finally decided when the hard-fought Kasimdzhanov-Topalov game ended in a draw. Topalov made his first steps in the chess game when he was eight years old. He grabbed his first world title at the age of 14 at the Junior World Chess Championship in Puerto Rico.
