Ruling Coalition to Back Parvanov for Second Term of Office

Date: 30.12.2005

The parties of the government coalition are likely to back the nomination of incumbent Bulgaria's President Georgi Parvanov for the presidential election in 2006, it emerged from the statements made by representatives of the three parties - the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP), centrist National Movement Simeon II (NMS) and the predominantly Turkish Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF) on Thursday. Ivelin Nikolov, BSP Deputy Leader said it was "realistic" to think of Georgi Parvanov as the nominee of the three-party coalition. "Nothing is guaranteed yet," he said in an interview with the Bulgarian News Agency. "There are no obstacles for the coalition to field one candidate at the presidential elections," said Rossen Vladimirov, MRF Deputy Leader.

Meanwhile, the right-wing leaders confessed their parties would be hardly able to unite for the presidential elections. "A common right nominee will show that at least the right wing is still able to unite round an idea," said Krassimir Karakachanov, leader of the Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization (IMRO).
