Bulgaria`s TOP policemen awarded in Sofia

Date: 31.12.2005

Interior Minister Rumen Petkov served the "Policeman of the Year" awards in Sofia. Seven policemen received individual prizes for their good job as law keepers. The minister also served awards to six teams.

"Policeman of the Year" has been awarded for twelve consecutive years already. The prize usually goes to officers who have shown valor and professionalism in the fight against crime.

During the ceremony, Petkov also awarded posthumously Colonel Vulcho Vulchev, 57, who was beaten to death on December 22 in his efforts to save a young man from two robbers.

The "Honorable sign of the Interior Ministry" first degree was served to Vulchev's sons.

Colonel Vulcho Vulchev, 57, was beaten dead Thursday night while trying to help a young man and his girlfriend, who were assaulted by thieves. The attackers hit Vulchev in the head, which has evidently caused his death, forensic experts said. Vulchev was chief of the police unit in Vidin twice and worked as a lawyer after his retirement. He was married, with two sons.
