Bulgarian roma kept in jail after atrocity

Date: 10.10.2005

Five young Roma men were left behind bars Sunday on suspicion of brutally murdering a Bulgarian.

The detainees, aged 17 to 21, are thought to have fiercely beaten Assen Mitrev and then burned him alive.

The shocking crime took place in Voluyak, a village just outside Sofia.

Reports say that the attackers tried to force Mitrev to convey his house to them.

A judge found enough evidences Sunday not to release the five suspects.

According to some media, the killing is the most brutal crime committed in Sofia over the last decade.
