Austria offers to rid Sofia of garbage

Date: 28.01.2006

Vienna-based "Ivenio Consult" of Austria offers to incinerate solid wastes in the "Republika" thermal power plant in Pernik, 30 km south of Sofia. Garbage burning can be harnessed for generation of electro and thermal energy, said district governor Ivan Dimitrov.

Recent research shows that burning garbage is more caloric than coal and the generated energy is cheaper. The project is worth 140 million euro but the investors have not been found as yet. If the project is implemented, the facility's capacity will be high enough to incinerate the trash of both Pernik and Sofia. Bulgaria's capital has experienced several garbage crises in recent years.
