Bulgarian racket hits record-high WTA seat

Date: 31.01.2006

Bulgaria's current best tennis player Tsvetana Pironkova will reach a personal WTA ranking record, hitting the 82nd position.

The ranking will be officially announced on Monday.

Pironkova, 18, kicked out Wimbledon champion Venus Williams out of the prestigious Australian Open last week, making it to the second round of her first Grand Slam tournament.

The victory pushed Pironkova twelve seeds up with a total of 321,5 points.

The teenager is now Bulgaria's most successful tennis pro, after Magdalena Maleeva gave up her playing career and Sesil Karatantcheva was banned from playing for the next 2 years on doping charges.
