UK Envoy to Sofia: Closing Labour Market is not Discrimination

Date: 27.10.2006

Closing the labour market doors to Bulgarians and Romanians is not discrimination, UK Ambassador to Sofia Jeremy Hill explained.

The UK just wants to avoid pressure that could come from another big wave of migrant workers, Hill told private bTV.

The envoy said that his country was taking advantage of the natural transition of the two countries in the EU, which would give it time to rethink its current situation.

Some Bulgarians will still be able to find a job in the UK, but the labour market is too sensitive at the moment, Hill added.

Many Bulgarians, however, believe that the UK is discriminating against them, pointing out that while Brits take their time to ponder on Bulgaria's situations, illiterate Polish citizens will continue flocking to the country without any valid documents, snatching up all the jobs.
