German, Bulgarian railways shook hands for co-op

Date: 25.02.2006

The state railways of Bulgaria and Germany will cooperate to increase the traffic from Western Europe to Middle East countries through Bulgaria.

An agreement for this was reached during the visit of Bulgarian Transport Minister Petar Mutafchiev in Germany.

The German railways Deutsche Bahn will also consult the Bulgarian State Railways (BDZ) on re-structuring its energy and communications network.

At the meeting with the CEO of Deutsche Bahn Hartmud Medorn, Minister Mutafchiev negotiated also for the formation of an expert group to work out ways for increasing traffic in the region, as well as along the Danube.

Bulgarian ports along the Danube are part of trans-European transport corridors 4 and 7.

Bulgaria will rely on German investment for major infrastructure projects, Transport Minister Petar Moutafchiev said after a meeting with his German counterpart Wolfgang Tiefensee in Berlin a day earlier.

Also on Thursday Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov opened a three-day official visit to Germany. He is scheduled to tour Berlin and Erfurt, the capital of the State of Thuringia.

In Berlin Parvanov will confer with Bundestag President Norbert Lammert, Berlin Mayor Klaus Wowereit and former chancellor Helmut Kohl.
