Date: 25.03.2006

More than 400,000 Bulgarians of Roma origin will receive state assistance in improving household conditions, according to a governmental program.

In the next ten years the government will build up 30,065 and renovate 47,245 households, in a step implementing the international initiative Decade of Roma Inclusion 2005-2015, party to which is also Bulgaria.

The implementation of the national program for improving household conditions of Roma people is one of the areas of sternest control on the side of the European Union on Bulgaria.

The program covers 100 neighbourhoods in 88 towns and cities, where also utilities infrastructure will be improved - sewage, electricity, gas supplies, street lightening, etc.

More than 800,000 Roma people live in Bulgaria, a large part of which are illiterate and survive in misery.
