Special unit chases poachers

Date: 26.03.2006

A special unit of eight guardsmen - employees of the regional directorate with the National Forestry Department (NFD) - will chase poachers in the woods. They have been trained by experts of the Interior Ministry and are equipped with special gear.

"The task unit will tour the regions facing serious problem with poachers and help their colleagues cope with it," said Iliya Simeonov, head of the NFD.

Last year, the forest rangers drew up 22,638 penal statements, 130 of them were issued to one and the same person.

"We'll address the Prosecutor General and ask him to take all the necessary measures to prevent recurring offences," Iliya Simeonov added.

Within ten days a hot line for citizens will be opened, so anyone who wants to report cases of poaching will have a chance to do it. The signals will be recorded around the clock.
