Bulgaria busts drug factory worth millions

Date: 31.03.2006

Police authorities have busted an illegal drug factory in a village near Kyustendil in southwestern Bulgaria.

Over 150 kilos of amphetamine powder, 120 kilos of materials like cellulose and quinine, and equipment, all worth about EUR 13.5 M were discovered during a police raid of a house in the village.

A machine for pressing into tablets and an electrical scale were also discovered on the premises, leading authorities to the conclusion that the house had been used as an amphetamine pill factory. The house is owned by a 39-year-old man, who is now wanted nationwide, along with three suspected accomplices. Their names, however haven't been released.

The building had been placed under surveillance, police said, because its owner had already been arrested for drug dealing. The amphetamines were most likely trafficked to the Middle East, sold for about EUR 15 apiece. A kilo of the powder is enough to make about 6,000 pills.
